Composition and Structure of Cables and Optical Fibers

Composition and Structure of Cables and Optical Fibers

Fiber optic cables are composed of a core, cladding, coatings, strength members, and protective jackets, primarily made from ultra-pure silica and specialized polymers to ensure efficient light transmission and durability.Core and CladdingThe core is the central part of the optical fiber that carries light signals. It is usually made of ultra-pure silica (SiO₂), sometimes doped with germanium to control the refractive index for optimal light propagation . Surrounding the core is the cladding, also made of silica but with a slightly lower refractive index, which ensures total internal reflection and confines light within the core . The cladding may also include minor chemical additives to enhance optical properties .Coatings and Protective LayersEach fiber is coated with a dual-layer UV-cured acrylate: a soft primary coating to cushion the glass and a hard secondary coating for mechanical protection . These coatings prevent microbending and physical damage but do not affect light transmission. In some cables, fibers are arranged in ribbons or bundles with a UV-curable resin matrix to maintain alignment and stability .Strength MembersTo prevent stretching and mechanical failure, fiber optic cables include strength members made from materials such as aramid yarn (Kevlar), fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP), or steel . These components absorb tensile stress and protect the delicate fibers during installation and operation.Cable Jacket and ArmoringThe outer cable jacket provides environmental protection against moisture, UV radiation, chemicals, and abrasion. Jackets are typically made from polyethylene, PVC, or other durable polymers . For outdoor or high-risk applications, additional armoring with steel or aluminum layers may be added to resist physical damage and rodent attacks .Optional ComponentsSome fiber optic cables include water-blocking elements, ripcords, or metallic components for grounding and chemical insulation . In high-density bundles, light-absorbing glass layers may be inserted to reduce crosstalk between fibers .SummaryIn essence, a fiber optic cable is a carefully engineered assembly where the core and cladding handle light transmission, coatings and strength members provide mechanical protection, and the outer jacket and optional armoring ensure environmental resilience. The combination of ultra-pure silica, polymers, and reinforcing materials allows fiber optic cables to deliver high-speed, low-loss, and EMI-free communication over long distances .
