African Fiber Optic Communication Plant

African Fiber Optic Communication Plant

Africa's largest fiber optic cable plant is Coleman Technical Industries' facility in Sagamu, Nigeria, capable of producing up to 9 million kilometres of fiber annually.Coleman Technical Industries Fiber PlantColeman Technical Industries Limited (CTIL), led by chairman Asiwaju Solomon Onafowokan, launched the largest fiber optic cable manufacturing plant in Africa in Sagamu, Ogun State, Nigeria. The facility spans over 350,000 square metres and includes a smelting section capable of processing 3,000 tons of aluminum and 10,000 tons of copper per month . The plant is designed to produce up to 9 million kilometres of fiber optic cable annually, supporting Nigeria's goal of building a self-reliant digital infrastructure network and reducing dependence on imported cables . It also positions the company for exports across West Africa, with projected combined domestic and export revenue of approximately US$10 billion . The plant's commissioning was attended by senior government officials, including representation from President Bola Tinubu, highlighting its strategic importance for Nigeria's digital economy and industrial diversification . The facility is expected to create over 20,000 direct jobs and 200,000 indirect jobs, while also supporting the government's plan to deploy 90,000 kilometres of fiber optic cables nationwide .Role of Fiber Optic Networks in AfricaFiber optic infrastructure is critical for improving internet speed, reliability, and affordability across Africa. While submarine cables connect countries to the global internet, terrestrial fiber networks extend connectivity to landlocked regions and urban centers . Major projects, such as SEACOM, EASSy, and 2Africa, provide the backbone for national broadband networks in countries like Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt, and Ethiopia . Fiber deployment enables Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) services, supporting streaming, remote work, e-commerce, and digital services . High-capacity fiber networks also drive economic growth. According to the World Bank, a 10% increase in broadband penetration in low- and middle-income countries can lead to a 1.38% increase in GDP growth . Fiber connectivity supports digital financial services, e-learning, e-health, and e-government, fostering inclusive growth and improving quality of life . Initiatives like Rwanda's Smart Africa project aim to replicate successful fiber deployment models across the continent .Strategic ImpactThe establishment of large-scale fiber optic plants like Coleman's in Nigeria represents a major step toward self-sufficiency in digital infrastructure. It reduces reliance on imports, strengthens local manufacturing, and enhances Africa's competitiveness under frameworks like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) . Combined with ongoing terrestrial and submarine cable projects, these developments are bridging the digital divide, enabling faster internet access, and supporting the continent's digital transformation .
