Temporary Distribution Box Grounding Scheme

Temporary Distribution Box Grounding Scheme

Temporary distribution boxes should be grounded using copper or copper-alloy conductors connected to a dedicated grounding electrode system, ensuring low-resistance paths and proper bonding.Grounding ConductorsFor temporary distribution boxes, earth leads should be yellow and green, made of stranded copper or copper alloy, with a minimum cross-sectional area of 6 mm² (or 10 AWG in the US) and a maximum of 70 mm² . These conductors connect the distribution box to the grounding electrode and ensure a low-resistance path for fault currents.Grounding Electrode SystemA dedicated grounding electrode is required, typically a copper-bonded steel rod driven into the earth. The electrode should be installed in a location with good soil conductivity, and multiple rods may be used if the resistance exceeds recommended limits. Approved conductive backfill, such as bentonite clay, can improve grounding performance in poor soil conditions . The total ground resistance should ideally be less than 25 ohms, and for critical systems, less than 0.1 ohm between system parts .BondingAll non-current-carrying metal parts of the distribution box, including the enclosure and mounting plates, must be bonded to the grounding system. This ensures that all metallic components are at the same potential, reducing the risk of electric shock . Connections should be mechanically secure using clamps or couplings, and non-ferrous materials are recommended to prevent corrosion .Installation ConsiderationsExternal grounding is required even if the box is internally grounded .RCD or ELCB protection should be installed on all final circuits and tested before use.Buried cables should be at least 0.2 m below ground for temporary installations and protected with tiles or conduit.Voltage drop and resistance must be calculated for long cable runs to ensure proper grounding performance . By following these practices, temporary distribution boxes will have a safe, low-resistance grounding system that protects personnel and equipment from electrical faults and surges.
