Amorphous silicon photovoltaic cells require precise layer structures, doping levels, optical enhancements, and substrate compatibility to achieve efficient solar energy conversion.Layer Structure and ThicknessAmorphous silicon (a-Si) solar cells typically use a p-i-n or n-i-p photodiode structure. The p-type layer is very thin (around 20 nm), the intrinsic (i) layer is thicker (several hundred nanometers), and the n-type layer is also thin. The intrinsic layer is the main light-absorbing region, where most photons generate electron-hole pairs, and its thickness is critical for balancing absorption and carrier collection efficiency . Typical intrinsic layer thickness ranges from 300–500 nm, while the p and n layers are usually 20–50 nm .Doping and Electrical PropertiesDoping is essential to create n-type and p-type layers. Phosphorus doping (using PH3) produces n-type conductivity, while boron doping (using B2H6) produces p-type conductivity . The doping concentrations are optimized to maintain a strong built-in electric field (typically >104 V/cm) and to ensure efficient charge separation and transport.
