Fiber Optic Router Entry Point

Fiber Optic Router Entry Point

The fiber optic entry point is where the fiber cable enters your home, connects to the ONT, and then links to your router via Ethernet.Fiber Entry Point and ONTThe fiber entry point is typically installed at a convenient location near an external wall or in a small access chamber, such as a wall-mounted box or subterranean “Toby Box” . This point serves as the demarcation between the external fiber network and your home network. From here, the fiber cable is routed to the Optical Network Terminal (ONT), which converts the light signals from the fiber into electrical signals that your router can use . The ONT must be connected to a power source, either directly to a wall socket or via a trailing lead, as long as the cable can reach .Routing ConsiderationsFiber optic cables are delicate and cannot be bent sharply. The minimum bend radius is typically around 30mm, so routing around corners, skirting boards, or door frames should avoid tight 90-degree bends . The fiber cable from the entry point to the ONT can be flexible enough to follow walls or skirting, but careful planning ensures the cable is not damaged during installation.Connecting the RouterOnce the ONT is installed, it connects to your router or gateway using a high-speed Ethernet cable, usually Cat5e or Cat6 . The router can be placed up to 100 meters away from the ONT in theory, but for optimal Wi-Fi coverage, a central location in the home is recommended. In some setups, the ONT and router may be combined into a single device, but separate ONT and router units provide more flexibility and performance options.Summary of Installation StepsFiber drop to home: The fiber cable is run from a nearby terminal (pole or underground box) to your home .Entry point installation: A small box or wall-mounted enclosure is installed to terminate the fiber safely .ONT installation: The ONT is mounted inside or just outside the home, connected to power, and converts optical signals to Ethernet .Router connection: The ONT is linked to the router via Ethernet, distributing high-speed internet throughout the home . Proper planning of the fiber entry point, ONT location, and router placement ensures high-speed, reliable internet while protecting the fiber cable from damage.
