Three types of relays for relay protection

Three types of relays for relay protection

Overcurrent, differential, and distance relays are three common types of relay protection used in electrical power systems.1. Overcurrent RelayAn overcurrent relay operates when the current exceeds a preset threshold, protecting equipment from damage due to excessive currents caused by faults or overloads. It can be instantaneous, responding immediately to high currents, or time-delayed, allowing coordination with other relays in the system to ensure selective tripping .2. Differential RelayA differential relay compares currents at two or more points in a system, such as across a transformer or generator. It operates when there is a difference between these currents, indicating an internal fault. This type of relay is highly sensitive and provides precise protection for critical equipment .3. Distance RelayA distance relay functions based on the impedance of a transmission line. It measures the voltage-to-current ratio to determine the distance to a fault and trips the circuit breaker if the fault is within its protection zone. Distance relays are commonly used for transmission line protection . These three types of relays form the backbone of power system protection, ensuring safety, reliability, and rapid isolation of faulty sections to prevent equipment damage and system instability.
